Strengthening Regional Cooperation: A Common Vision for the Mediterranean
Estoril, Portugal, November 26, 2024 – On the sidelines of the 10th United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Global Forum, H.E. George A. Papandreou, President of the Circle the Med Forum and former Prime Minister of Greece, met with H.E. Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
 
Amidst the complex and evolving challenges facing the Mediterranean region—ranging from the escalating impacts of the climate crisis to the urgent need to preserve its rich cultural heritage, foster sustainability, and ensure a just and equitable transition—Mr. Papandreou and Mr. Kamel underscored the critical importance of developing a shared Mediterranean vision, one that embraces the interconnectedness of environmental, economic, and cultural priorities while fostering resilience and inclusivity.
 
Their discussions reflected a strong commitment to advancing holistic, forward-looking strategies that unite stakeholders across sectors and nations in pursuit of a sustainable, peaceful, and prosperous Mediterranean future. As part of this dialogue, they reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration aiming to bring tangible results to the lives of Mediterranean people, focusing on areas such as green transition, cultural cooperation, and inclusive economic development.
 
During the meeting, Secretary General Kamel accepted an invitation of Mr. Papandreou to be the Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker at the upcoming 8th Edition of the Circle the Med Forum, which will take place on June 4, 2025, at the New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece.
 
The 8th Edition of Circle the Med Forum, the par excellence environmental diplomacy forum in the Mediterranean, will focus on innovative pathways toward a sustainable and inclusive future for the region.
