Researcher, Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC)

Elisa Furlan is a Senior Scientist at the CMCC Foundation and Adjunct Professor at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. Her research focuses on climate change risk assessment and the design of adaptation pathways for coastal and transitional ecosystems, with expertise ranging from the Venice Lagoon to the Mediterranean basin. Her work integrates machine learning-based modelling and strategic foresight tools to evaluate socio-ecological vulnerability to multi-hazard risks and the mitigation potential offered by Nature based Solutions. She currently leads the CMCC Research Unit on "Transformative Adaptation Measures and Planning for Resilience," which focuses on supporting societal transformative change by applying models and tools enabling broader integration of stakeholder and decision-maker visions, alongside scenario planning. As the Project Coordinator for the Horizon Europe projects DesirMED and GRACE (EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change), she leads efforts to translate complex scientific data into transformative planning for climate-resilient regions. Her work emphasizes community engagement and capacity building, ensuring the transfer of scientific knowledge into local to regional adaptation planning. Additionally, she serves as a Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for Chapter 7 – "Societal transformation for a sustainable future" in the MedECC Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2).
