Michael J. Scoullos is Professor Emeritus of Environmental Chemistry and Oceanography at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He currently serves as Director of the UNESCO Chair and Network on Sustainable Development Management and Education in the Mediterranean.

He is the Founder and Chairman (since 1991) of the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE), the leading environmental NGO platform in the Mediterranean region, and Coordinator of the MEdIES Network, which engages over 6,500 educators in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). He also serves as Chairman of the Global Water Partnership–Mediterranean and Executive Secretary of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (COMPSUD).

Professor Scoullos has an extensive academic and policy-oriented career, with a substantial body of scientific work and has organized and chaired numerous major international conferences among many international assignments. He represented the European Parliament for 25 years on the Management Board of the European Environment Agency (EEA) and he has chaired the World Bank Science Advisory Committee for the Red Sea – Dead Sea Water Conveyer.

He has played a leading role in major EU-funded regional initiatives supporting non-EU countries in the Southern Neighbourhood, including Horizon 2020 CB/MEP, SWIM-Horizon 2020, and, since 2019, the Water and Environment Support (WES) programme and its continuation, WES-BCA (2024–2027),
where he serves as Team Leader.
