Sofia Avgerinou-Kolonia is an architect and urban planner, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). She holds a PhD in Urban Geography from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, a DEA in History and Civilization (Urban Studies), and a diploma from the Institute of Regional Development at Panteion University. Her studies in France were supported by the Onassis Foundation.
With a career spanning over four decades, she has been dedicated to the sustainable development, regeneration, and spatial planning of historic cities, cultural landscapes, and Mediterranean settlements. She has coordinated numerous EU-funded projects, including MEDNETA, SUPREME, INNOMED-UP, and CARISMED, promoting cultural and environmental sustainability in urban and maritime Mediterranean contexts.
A long-standing member of ICOMOS since 1979, she has served as an elected member of the ICOMOS Board (2008, 2011, 2014), and is currently Vice President of ICOMOS Hellenic. She is also a member of the ICOMOS Academy and Honorary President of the International Scientific Committee on Historic Towns and Villages (CIVVIH). She played a leading role in the development of the Valletta Principles (2011) and has significantly contributed to the scientific advancement and international outreach of ICOMOS.
Her academic and professional work has focused on integrated planning approaches that honor heritage while addressing the contemporary challenges of the Mediterranean region. Through research, teaching, and active participation in scientific committees, she continues to advocate for heritage-led sustainability and the safeguarding of the unique cultural identity of Mediterranean urban environments.
