Research Director, National Observatory of Athens & Director of the Greek GEO Office

Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos is a Research Director at the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). He is active in the fields of Earth observation, atmospheric composition, Earth system processes and climate, climate change and relevant synergistic interactions, policy and urban perspectives. He is leading the Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry Group of NOA (http://apcg.meteo.noa.gr/). He serves as the Director of the Greek GEO Office (2014 –present), represents Greece in the relevant international bodies in the field of Earth observation (i.e. GEO Programme Board/Intergovernmental – 2015-present, EuroGEOSS Coordination Group/EC, 2017-present), he is Member of the Special Scientific Committee on Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (since 2020) and in the past he has served as Member of the Sectorial Scientific Council for the Environment and Energy of the National Council for Research and Technology (2014 - 2016), among other positions. Since September 2020 he is co-chairing together with UNESCO’s World Heritage Center, the Community Activity entitled “Earth Observations for Climate Change Impacts on World Heritage Cities (CCI-WHC)” within the frame of the GEO Work Programme, and since March 2021 he has been elected as co-chair of the GEO Progamme Board. In his research career, he has published 109 publications in peer reviewed journals and more than 140 in conferences, widely recognized by the scientific community (3800 citations, h-index-37), and he has participated in/coordinated more than 40 European and national projects.
