Serkos A. Haroutounian
Professor of Chemistry of the Agricultural University of Athens

He is Professor (former vice-Rector) of the Agricultural University of Athens, President of the Hellenic Agricultural Organization ELGO-DIMITRA and elected member of FAO (Food Agriculture Organization) Executive Committee at the United Nations. His research is focused on circular economy and the valorization of bioactive natural products aiming the development of novel functional foods, food supplements, biocides and medicines for humans and animals. He has published 172 articles in international scientific journals, holds two patents and serves as editorial board member in five scientific journals. For his research there are more than 4.500 citations in the international literature. He has successfully coordinated the implementation of 32 research projects and is currently involved in four projects concerning the circular economy and the climate change mitigation. His research project DIONYSOS has awarded in 2009 by the EU as best of the best environmental project. He has been involved in various rural development initiatives, concerning the exploitation of traditional Greek agricultural products and foods, which led to the certification of Fava and Tomataki Santorinis as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) products and the submission of application dossiers for Kashkaval (PGI) and Tsalafouti (PDO) cheeses. Currently he collaborates with the Northern Aegean Region for the certification of four traditional products of the region.
